Summary: Regarding a job position I wanted to apply recently but I came across to where I was asked why did I need an interpreter over the phone (Jes was interpreting for me). I am not sure if the company has their own website, I will keep you all posted.
Buy me a cup of coffee
Ohh, I’m very pissed for you. It is clear there is discriminated against you. I can’t believe how ignorant Cathy is.
Good thing you told to that employment agency about it. But I would still go ahead file complaint against them. To make them look very bad on them in the future reference.
OH brother!
what an idiot company! But thats good employment agency support your side!
file to BBB or file a complaint that employment agency suggested you that.
LIke Fairlady mentioned to make them look very bad on them IT’S TRUE!
Good Luck!
Misha :)
Whoaa yikes, that a discrimination. I don’t understand why the company just rejected someone before giving them an chance. have they ever heard of having interpreters on site if u needed one. My friend Robert works at closetmaid, he is very hard of hearing, he was apply to do forklift spot at his job, at first the job kept saying no cuz he was deaf then finally he fought about it and got his forklift spot. i don’t know why we the deaf have to basically fight for everything we need like a job…
Mercy!!!!!! This is an open and shut case of discrimination. The Cathys of the world make the deaf take 3 steps backwards instead of 3 steps forward..She needs some sensitivity training, most BIG ( her words ) companies have a hand book for personell,, and how to handle disabled applicants.. this woman obviously was asleep when they were giving the lecture on it..
You should file a complaint, and have the employment agency to back u up once you have done so, and at the same time look for another job.
Just recently I needed to see a specialist, and the woman who was to work with me on my issue, asked me why I needed an interpreter ( this was a Dutch woman who spoke very bad english) since I could speak and lip read so well, I said in order to know if we are on the same page I needed a sign language interpreter ( there are only 3 ASL INTERPRETERS in the entire country of Holland, and one of them lives 15 min from my house )..this woman also obviously had no idea what a sign language interpreter was, she was too concerned about patient and dr confidentally. Rather than go thru the whole American style process of explaining things, I simply said nee,,I will have this interpteter here or the treatment will not happen, I need the interpreter here to make it clear what is going to happen etc.She started to say something which looked like STUBBORN AMERICANS,, then shut her mouth and nodded and said YOU BRING THE INTERPETER AND WE WILL SEE …. I am like NO WE WILL NOT SEE ,, WE WILL USE AN INTERPRETER FOR ANY SESSIONS I need,
At that point I got up and shook her hand and walked out the office,,Stubborn,,, sure,,, she was too,, I am the deaf patient she is the specialist,, I know what I need, and she did not,
So for u .. educate this CATHY PERSON and the head honcho of Don J Young,, my guess is the head honcho will not want bad publicity and they may do a double take,,
In the mean time,, keep looking for something better, there is bound to be a perfect job for you out there,, Good luck babe keep us posted

Man, Geo, I am sorry. This sucks.
You can get validation by fighting back by filing a complaint of discrimination. It really helps that the employment agency is so supportive.
Go get them, Geo! :)
Hello, I’ve enjoyed your blogs. I don’t think I’ve posted before, or maybe I have. I’ve been lurking. I’m in the same boat as you. I have to look for a job as well. I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s only applying for one job at a time. I’ve been looking, and I’m not finding many that are good matches for me.
Anyway, that’s awful that they did that to you. Good that the employment agency is on your side. I don’t think it’s worth it to sue anyone for discrimination, though. What’s the point? It’s just a waste of time, energy and money and what would you get in return? Unfortunately, discrimination laws only serve as EDUCATION, not enforcement.
Funny, I was looking at the listings of my employment agency, and there was one position that looked like a great fit for me – but, it’s with my old company! So, I can’t apply for that position, forget it. I was thinking about telling my employment agency to take them off their preferred employers, as they don’t seem to be too deaf-friendly, so to speak.
I’ve been in touch with my employment agency, but not that much. Geo, how do you get in touch with your employment agency? The only way I can think of is to go in person, which I plan to do tomorrow morning. I do see my VR counselor, which is in the same place as the employment agency, once a week, but I should probably see someone in the employment agency as well…
Well, thanks for reading!
Short message: Email this post to that Don J. Young company. Just a suggestion.
That was disrespect! That’s discrimination. I have hard time to look for work as well. I have to keep persistent. I’m glad that employment agency sticks up for you. Hope you will get a job soon anytime. Keep thinking positive.
Next time, you could say this…
“Excuse me, the Deaf people are not invalid, unlike yourself. And, we are able to do multitasking a lot better than most deaf-impaired!”
:)
Hi Geo…
WHOA!! When i see ur blog/vlog talk about cathy and Don J Young.. this make me pissed off. I am not appreciation what they said to you. I have tell u my experience myself like u do.. but i will trying to blog/vlog to share with you and everyone. someday i will send blog/vlog to u alright..
I am shocked that employment agency is support ur side. i am glad about that… Oh wow.. What Idioit Cathy and Don J. Young company.. Seem Cathy dont know how to communcation or whatever.. u r right discrimial on the deaf ppl.. Its really hurt to deaf ppl’s feeling.. I can’t believe..
I am sure that U will fight and againist that idioit cathy and company.. Wink.. I cant believe.. oh gee.. I feel like i come down and speak out with cathy.. lolz
take care of ya..
That is another sign of superior in hearing level. Cathy’s perspective and concern is your hearing skills instead of your quality skills. That’s what problem that we are facing right now. There are insufficient public relations in our community to educate companies that hearing is not only factor of concerns for working in warehouse. I have one friend who works for Target’s warehouse and he is deaf with total dependable interpreter. He never have problem and he use pen and paper to communicate, but now he use pager to communicate. :)
Bottom line, we don’t have any public relation to educate the companies to deal with people who are deaf. Your experience can apply to “Audism” as well. I hope you can get the job that you want and most important, your rights to get that job. :)
That really sucks!
What I suggest you do beyond filing a complaint is EDUCATE. These people haven’t got a clue. They need education so they do not continue to give these kinds of responses to deaf people. If you cannot educate, find out which advocacy agency is near you or them who can go in an educated with some in-service or community education. We need to take it a step beyond complain and follow up by offering replacement behaviors and responses. Good vlog.
~ LaRonda
That happened to several of my friends here in Denver metro. I noticed many companies has started to use “safety” as a reason not to consider deaf applicants.
I’m getting really tired of it and glad you brought it up. It’s an issue for me and surprise that the deaf blog/vlog world didn’t even consider it a serious issue.
I’m seriously thinking of going to EEOC every time I get a “sorry safety reason” excuse when i apply for position.
That sucks.
Geo,
I am really pissed off at Don J. Young’s companies. You should file complaint to against their business.. Cathy is really harsh and abused of your believe which she is really knew nothing about any kind of job fitting your job expereinced shoud be fitting your new job. I think Cathy is outraged and barrier of discrimination on you.
I feel like to fax their business and tell world what Cathy insulted Geo! It will looking bad business. I appuladed that Geo is really efforting to get a jobs very bad. Agree with Employment office did supported your side. Smack Employment Office.
Geo, I m curious what Jes think. I know it’s already distrubed him lot.
Wow, it’s great hearing all of your comments that get me seriously thinking! I just got home a few minutes ago from going places to drop off resumes, so far so good. These places where I dropped off my resume, they all seem to be nice people. So I hope it is a good sign.
Hi Jenny!
Oh no about the old job that you saw listed on their listings, I think it won’t hurt to let them know that the company isn’t too deaf-friendly since it is not worth for any other Deafies to apply.
This employment agency that I have been in touch with is really great agency and they doesn’t treat me any difference, not a bit at all. So I am so grateful finding that agency. It’s only in Spokane/Tri-Cities in case if anyone is interested to know more, the link is http://www.empnw.com/triehome.html .
They update their listings every Mondays/Wednesdays afternoon so when I find one I want to apply, either I call or come in their office to get the rest info to apply.
More often we contact the agency, the better chance we can get. :-)
-SG
Hey kd of denver,
You got that damn right! It seems like we all have to hear “safety” reasons all the time. In my mind, I was like.. you mean we, Deafies, put hearing people’s lives in any danger or what?
That makes no sense at all… ugh!!
Hey Shawn R.,
I like the idea of sending them an email to this post. Lemme find their e-mail address, it is going to be great!!!!!
Thanks for the idea!
-SG
Geo,
I hope it is working out for email. I think Shawn R’s suggestion is great idea! It might be better than my idea. :???:
Hey Deaf Pixie,
Jes was very pissed, I could tell even before he interpreted but he remained calm because he was acting an interpreter.
After he hang up, he was saying how totally unbelievable of what happened. It was all new to him and he said he now know how we all Deafies feel that we have to face every single day in our lives. He feels us.
For starters, I might as well contact BBB like some of you suggested and so that’s way BBB will contact them and share my complaint. None of any businesses want to hear from BBB.
I’m still looking for that company’s website so I can email them this post but so far it looks like they don’t have one nor have any e-mail address. All I have is their phone number.
-SG
Hugs Geo and Jes,
I know How much I was angry after I read your vlogs. It is really made me so angry.. How can Cathy dare? Horrible the business. I suggested you to written a letter to BBB about their business. And inculding their business phone and place, etc.
I wish all of things they can respect you in very small town. Pasco seem going to grow fast someday.
I know a deaf guy that works in a warehouse. He uses a pager and that’s how people contact him. You should fight this. Geez~
Oh my, it is bad! Yea, educate them , but a file complaint against them is the first thing I would do! Then…they need to be educated and it’d be good to see them being embarrassed when educated!
Send it to Don and asked that Cathy is fired! Who knows you might end up getting a better job that is if you really want it.
Ok you know how I feel! First of all I would email your video to the company’s CEO. When I sent that video I would also include my resumme. I wonder what :cathy’s position is with this comapny? I also wonder does Mr. Young have any idea what the idiot just did. You cannot discriminate you know that. I would not only file a complaint I would go out of my way to let them know that I am and the exact reason. They just passed by the best employee they would have had.
Wow.. what a company.. It sure is a discrimination. I sure do hope that everything will work out for you. It’s real nice of employment agency to support you in that kind of situation. Keep us informed on how things go for you. :o)
Geez!
Glad you spoke up for your cause.
*Hugs*
White Ghost
Jo,
#*&^%$#@!! I agree with you. I am so pissed off about Cathy’s behavior is not acceptable and The company should not discriminate Geo or who intersting the job position. I need to calm down. What will they say after result if she could email the CEO. It is very best idea!
Geo,
You appear to be an extremely personable guy so I would suggest you try to show up in person as much as possible…so they can see that the whole deaf/hearing barrier will be no problem to overcome. Has Cathy ever heard of email, paging etc. to find someone in BIG warehouse? You have great communication skills so don’t get defeated too soon!
Hey L,
I’m not sure I’d even want to walk into that building looking at Cathy’s face how the way she treated me.
I’m better off working elsewhere, anyways.
I will be sure to bring the attention to BBB to make sure it won’t happen again in the future to any other Deafies.
-SG
Oh my goodness! Were you able to get Cathy’s last name? She could have been the owner of Don J. Young Inc company??
Do you really want to work there? Especially if they have this kind of attitude that deaf people “cannot do it”, I wouldn’t want to work in a company like this but this is just me.
Good luck!
Hi michele,
Oh you are right, no way I would see myself working there ever. I might as well to contact BBB letting them know what they have done and to make sure it won’t happen in the future because none of any Deafies deserve this to go through what I had to.
From what I understand is Cathy is the manager of HR but who knows.
-SG
Geo,
I am on your side!! There are many fishes over there that will accept your position. I agree with you that you need to file a complaint about this Company. That is full of discriminate!! I went through it many times and they has not knowledge of how to handle with deaf needs. We have to educate the companies when deaf people apply. We have to fight for our rights.
I strongly suggest that you file a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) for what was perceived to be an act of discrimination under Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Public Law 101-336. The complaint process is free; you simply need to complete and submit an intake form, which can be found at http://eeoc.gov/charge/overview_charge_filing.html . If you prefer to utilize a sign language interpreter to make a complaint in person, you can contact your local EEOC field office for an intake appointment. To locate the nearest field office, you can go to http://eeoc.gov/offices.html.
The ADA does not only protect employees with disabilities from disability-related discrimination, it also protects applicants and interviewees with disabilities who want to be considered for employment, with or without reasonable accommodation, from discrimination. If I remember correctly, the statute of limitations for filing Title I of the ADA complaints with the EEOC expires 180 days after the date of the alleged discrimination. In addition, the EEOC handles an enormously high volume of complaints and thus, it will most likely take 2-5 years before they will begin an investigation into your claim unless you regularly contact the EEOC unit to which your complaint has been assigned and inquire as to the status of your complaint; it may help reduce the number of years that it takes them to get to the investigation stage if they know how interested you are in getting your complaint resolved satisfactorily.
The EEOC may even offer you the option to have a voluntary mediation with the employer, to be facilitated by a professional mediator, to resolve the complaint during which time you can provide some education to the employer on how you can perform the essential functions of the position for which you wish to be considered, with or without reasonable accommodation; you can also refer them to the Job Accommodations Network (JAN) website, which is an extremely popular website for employers who wish to comply with Title I of the ADA and provide their applicants and employees with disabilities with reasonable accommodations. The website address is http://www.jan.wvu.edu/.
Good luck!
Hey Seek Geo,
oh nothing new shit, Cathy needs to be educated about Deaf. Cathy is very DUMB. I am very glad that you are very STRONG.
Thumbs up!!!
Thanks for sharing,
Bobby L.
Hello Geo !
I just tell you : ” Don’t lost your mind and stay courageous !”

Whatever , maybe we change history !!
(Sorry about my English… if you see a error , don’t be shy , let’s me know … I want learn more
)
Good Luck Geo ! You are my hero !!
Bye Jassy xxx
Wow yep there is always some excuse for normal hearing to put the deaf on the back burner. Fight for it and demand them to learn about deaf not just an invalid !!!
Inquisitive Mind,
I learn something about this one of your comment. Interesting!
One problem I tried to click few time and it is not working website?
:???: Http://eeoc.gov/offices.html. :???:
Hmmm, I was able to access the website just now.
Try adding “www.” before “eeoc” (i.e., http://www.eeoc.gov/offices.html). If it all fails, do a Google search for “EEOC field offices” and it will point you in the right direction.
Hope this helps.
Hey Deaf Pixie,
There was a period at the end of address but I fixed so it is working now. You can try his link.
Hi Inquisitive Mind,
Wow.. you provided a lot of excellent information is what I really need. That is what many people need to bookmark them if ever needed.
I am going to have it taken care of tomorrow with BBB and EEOC to start from there.
Thanks very much!! :-)
-SG
Thumb up!
Good nite! SG, Good lucks with BBB and EEOC. Please update with us
Take the advice of #33. Often when you file a complaint, you will be able to educate this company how you COULD do the job. They probably do not know about pagers and such. They will be surprised at what you could do. I have filed a complaint with the Office of Civil Rights in the past. It was a simple process, but different organization. However, when filing a complaint with the government for ADA offenses, you aren’t suing for damages, so it doesn’t cost anything. The government will go in and educate the company and slap their hands a little. It will be a good lesson for them!
That is so…so…wrong/sad/frustrating.
Cathy made a huge mistake. She had a great opportunity and all she saw was obstacles. It’s that company’s loss…not yours.
Cathy is a perfect example of deficit thinking…
I hope you will find a job that you enjoy, Geo.
I agree with others, try sending this page to the company for educational puposes
SusanA
I glad that the employment agency won’t advertising for Don J. Young are S.O.B. (excuse my language). That company should take class deaf 101 then they would understand what the deaf can or can’t for the safety issues. The company not only one, I am sure plenty of many companies out there had same thing to discriminate deaf people. All deaf people are beautiful human beings. I hope you will success, keep going!
Geo,
I’m just so glad to hear that the employment agency fully supports you on this horrible issue. Like so many have already said, people like Cathy need to be educated about the Deaf.
Too bad you don’t live in CT, because my job position is over in about 2 weeks, I’d recommend for you to have my job – that’s if you don’t mind cooking for 30 toddlers and babies everyday hehe.
Hey Roberto!
No way I would cook 30 toddlers and babies, I’d go insane!! Why do you have to leave that position in two weeks, anyway?
I am going to do what I need to do tomorrow by contacting EEOC and BBB and see from there. I will keep you all posted.
Wish me luck! I refuse to allow this happen to other Deafies. This is just wrong what Cathy did!
I still have no luck locating their e-mail or even their own website which I don’t think they even have one.
I will see what I can do, anyways. I’m sure the agency will give me all info I need to file a complaint.
-SG
That’s totally sucks!
I’m WAREHOUSE manager and deaf and I hires people to be warehouse clerk with multi-tasks PLUS operate a FORKLIFT! Also, I hired people, who know ASL as no matter what kind of person. As long a person is qualified that could meet company that keep productivity!
If you are considering to moving to San Diego, CA. then just send a resume.
Hi Jon Savage!
Aw.. you made me feel better! :-) Only if I live in SD, you know I would! That’d be awesome working for you!
Thanks a bunch!

By the way, you managed to give us that signature, the gesture of OK???? Phew!
