Super Bowl Commercials: 81% Captioned

Filed under : Blog, Deaf Topics

After Super Bowl the other night, I was wondering whether or not this year has improved with more closed captions compared to past years. So, I went ahead and broke down and created a list that shows those with CC and ones with no CC.

Commercial w/CC

If you see parentheses which means more than once.

Hyundai (4)
Bud Light (5)
Snickers
FocusOnTheFamily
Boostmobile
Doritos (4)
Coca-Cola (2)
GoDaddy (2)
The Wolfman – trailer
Bridgestone (2)
Cars.com
CBS Cares
Careerbuilder.com
Dockers
Dovemencare.com
Dodge
Teleflora.com
Papa John’s
Alice In Wonderland – trailer
Dr Pepper
Intel
U.S. Cellular (2 excluding one that was garbled)
NFL.com/NFL Network
The Back-Up Plan – trailer
Prince Of Persia – trailer
Motorola
VW.com
Denny’s (3)
Michelob
Homeaway.com
KGB
2010Census.gov
Google
Dante’s Inferno
Audi
Taco Bell
Budweiser
E-Trade

Commercial w/no CC

Monster.com
Skechers (2)
Shutter Island – trailer
Late Show w/David Letterman (Leno/Oprah/Letterman)
NFL-Full Contact (tru-TV)
UniversalOrlando.com
FloTV (2)
Honda
Budweiser
E-Trade
Robin Hood – trailer

I broke it down and it shows that there are a total of 67 commercials (54 with CC while 13 with no CC) excluding previews for CBS TV shows along with local-only commercials.

That is 81% which is pretty high, that means only 19% that did not have CC.

Even though, I did not include previews for CBS TV shows but many previews are captioned. And yes, I included Late Night w/David Letterman on the non-cc list only because it irritated me.

There are only two commercial that has “garbled” CC that cannot be readable:
Jack In The Box
U.S. Cellulars

These companies had two commercials each, one with CC and one without CC.
E-Trade (2)
Budweiser (2)

In case you are wondering, none of our local-only commercials were captioned so unsure about yours.

When I see ones that are not captioned, I believe that it’s like saying they do not need our business.

Now the question is.. have they improved compared to past years, yes or no? After all this, I personally do thinks so, yes.

Reminder: This is not 100% accuracy since it might vary in some areas.

I do notice there are more CC even on movie trailer which normally doesn’t show. I’m surprise and pretty glad about it. Sadly, I want to see on youtube, they don’t have one at moment. If anyone know. Please do.

  2. Deaf Anonymous says:

McDonald’s commercial at 6:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time wasn’t captioned.

  3. Joscasta says:

One commercial didn’t need captioning at all.. the Google commercial!

  4. Seek Geo says:

    Hey Sam the Deaf,

From what I see is that it was just random people that uploaded to Youtube from TV so that’s why none of ‘em are captioned.

But if I want to, I can do that and it will be captioned except knowing people would flag it.

    Deaf Anon,

Ah, I didn’t see that one since I started at coin toss to end of the game at 0:00. And with McDonald’s… that’s quite surprising though. I thought they always provide captions, oh well.

    Joscasta,

Ha ha.. that’s what I exactly told Jes when we watched it. I was like.. well, the caption is not even needed!

But at least they did provide it so can’t complain.

  6. Henry says:

Move to Canada! CRTC (comparable to your FCC) has mandated 100% captioning of commercials and promos. Will take a while to take effect. And, yes, 100% of programs too. :thumb:

    Geo,
Interesting research. This is probably the only place to find this kind of analysis. Maybe keep this data and make comparison for next year.

I thought I’d also add where on 22frames.com you can find some of the trailers you might have missed (w/ captions of course):

    Robin Hood Trailer: http://www.22frames.com/search.aspx?q=robin+hood+trailer&cat=&strict=0&sort=relevance%20desc&asa=False

    Shutter Island Trailer: http://www.22frames.com/search.aspx?q=shutter+island+captioned+trailer&cat=&strict=0&sort=relevance%20desc&asa=False

    Hey Henry,

Oh wow.. that’s cool about Canada! Oh you know I don’t mind living there again! Maybe one day when Jes have a job offer there.

    22frames,

Sweet, many thanks! I didn’t get a chance to look at these. Cool! I definitely will do this again next year so we can compare whether if it’s for the worse or for better.

It should be very interesting. Also, I hope this blog will show these companies knowing how important to have CC or else their name will be listed under non-CC next year, he he.

Good to know there are more CC ads than before, but how annoying not to have the Letterman/Oprah/Leno ad captioned! :hissy:

P.S. – Your facebook photo is killing me! Nice shout out to DragRace! (Love that show and RuPaul!)

    Geo,
Just thought to refer you to this article. It supports your experiment’s results and gives some information about previous years’ captioning:

    Here’s the link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2010/02/05/DI2010020503165.html

Here’s the snippet (btw, they misspelled minuscule): “Takoma Park, Md.: National Association of the Deaf trackers across the country have preliminary estimates that about three-fourths of the nationally-broadcast commercials were closed-captioned. This is a significantly higher percentage than in past years. NAD worked with CBS and the National Football League to encourage advertisers to caption their commercials. The cost of closed captioning is miniscule compared to what advertisers pay the network and the NFL for their 30-second spots. The goal, of course, is 100 percent accessibility. Deaf and hard of hearing people are consumers, too. They buy Doritos, Budweiser, Coca-Cola, etc., just like everyone else.

Mr. Shales, I hope that your future reviews of Super Bowl commercials will include information on their accessibility to all viewers.”
